Treasure Sensory Bin: A Therapeutic Craft for ABA Services

Sensory play is an essential part when receiving Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services. Engaging children’s senses through hands-on activities can promote learning, relaxation, and social interaction. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to create a treasure-themed sensory bin—a delightful experience that combines play, learning, and imagination.

Why Treasure Sensory Bins Are Beneficial for Children with Autism:

  • Sensory Exploration: Garden sensory bins encourage children to engage their senses. The sights, sounds, and textures of the garden can make them more comfortable with sensory experiences.
  • Soothing and Anxiety Management: Sensory play can be soothing and help manage anxiety.

Materials You’ll Need

  • A large plastic box (deep enough to prevent spills)
  • Fillers (choose from the following): Kinetic sand, Elbow pasta, Black beans, Fruit loops, Rice, Plastic sea creatures
  • Items to hide: Seashells, Marbles, Small plastic trinkets
  • Additional tools: Spoon, Paper cups or small containers

How to Create Your Treasure Sensory Bin:

  • Take a large plastic box and ensure it’s deep enough to contain the sensory materials.
  • Fill the box with your chosen filler material (e.g., kinetic sand, rice, or black beans).
  • Spread out some items on the surface of the filler material.
  • Hide the Treasures
  • Include Tools for Exploration
  • Use a spoon or other scooping tool to dig into the sensory bin.

Creating a treasure sensory bin is a great activity for ABA therapy to encourage creativity and fine motor skills. As children “dig” for hidden items, they engage their senses, develop hand-eye coordination, and experience the joy of discovery.
