Exploring Textures with a Garden Sensory Activity for Autism Support

Sensory play is an essential part of childhood development, especially for children in ABA services. Engaging their senses through hands-on activities can promote learning, relaxation, and social interaction. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to create a garden-themed sensory bin—a fun experience that combines play, learning, and imagination.

Why Garden Sensory Bins Are Beneficial for Children with Autism:

  • Garden sensory bins encourage children to engage their senses. The sights, sounds, and textures of the garden can make them more comfortable with sensory experiences.
  • Sensory play can be soothing and help manage anxiety.

Materials you’ll need:

  • A plastic tub
  • 1 – 2 pounds of dried black beans
  • Toy flowers, toy vegetables or real vegetables for a variety of textures
  • Spoon, fork and bowls

How to make your garden sensory bin:

  1. Fill the plastic tub with the dried black beans.
  1. Use the spoon or fork to “plant” your flowers and vegetables in the beans
  1. Use your tools to harvest your vegetables!

Creating a garden sensory bin is a great activity for individuals in ABA therapy, encouraging creativity and fine motor skills. So, gather your materials, plant those imaginary seeds, and watch your child’s curiosity bloom in their very own garden!
