All children develop at their own pace and in their own way. However, as a

Conveniently located near the community of Barrington and the surrounding areas, including Lake County and McHenry County, we are dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children with autism. We take pride in partnering closely with parents and caregivers, so we can empower families to take an active role in their child’s development.
Melanie Higgins has always had a passion for children and helping them learn. She pursued her bachelor’s in elementary education and mild intervention at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN, alongside her athletic career in volleyball. After a few years of teaching first and third grade, Melanie quickly realized her passion for helping learners who needed extra support. To continue this passion, she earned her master’s of science in Applied Behavior Analysis from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
For over 11 years, Melanie has been helping children across school, home, clinic, and community settings reach their fullest potential. She has been with Cultivate for over five years. Melanie is also a mom to two lovely children who keep her grounded and enhance her ability to be a supportive and empathetic presence for the families we serve.
Our ABA clinic provides a structured and nurturing environment for children to develop essential developmental and age-appropriate skills. Through a combination of play–based and adult–directed activities, children learn communication, daily living, pre-academic, and social readiness. Our experienced team facilitates these sessions, helping your child build independence and confidence in a setting that mirrors real-world scenarios. Clinic–based service models include regular parent and caregiver training to maximize learning opportunities outside of structured ABA Therapy sessions.
In-home ABA therapy services target socially significant skills within the home environment. This approach targets communication, daily routines, and addresses specific challenges like communication, activities of daily living, and behavior management within a familiar home environment. Our team works closely with families to create personalized interventions, so we enhance engagement and foster independence within the home setting. Home–based service models include regular parent and caregiver training to maximize learning opportunities outside of structured ABA Therapy sessions.
If you’ve noticed differences in how your child communicates, interacts, or plays, getting clarity early can make all the difference. At Cultivate, we help families take those first important steps by offering trusted autism screenings, such as the M-CHAT-R (for toddlers) and the CAST (for older children).
These screenings can provide valuable insight and help determine whether pursuing a formal diagnostic evaluation is the next step. Our team can help directly connect you to our diagnostic partners to ensure families have clear pathways to the support they need.
We have had nothing but great experiences here. The transformation in my kids is incredible. Great communication. Always friendly. We love going here.
Cultivate has been a game changer for our little family. My child has grown SO much, cultivated so many relationships outside of our family, and all around has just gained so much confidence and maturity.
I wish I could give Cultivate INFINITE stars but they will only allow 5! My son has been a client for a little over a year. Just beginning at the age of 3. I had never left him in anyone’s care before.

In our Barrington location, we provide Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy that’s completely customized to each child’s needs. The number of therapy hours depends on what’s clinically appropriate for your child based on their skills and the behaviors we’re working on.
We also offer weekly parent support sessions, where we walk you through strategies you can use at home, in the community, or anywhere your child needs support. This helps make sure the progress your child makes in therapy actually carries over into everyday life.
Our goal is simple: support your child, support your family, and help everyone feel confident across all settings.
Yes, we do! If in-home ABA works better for your child’s needs, we can absolutely provide services in your home. Our team will look at your location, your schedule, and your child’s needs to figure out the best setup.
In-home therapy can be a great option because kids get to learn skills in the environment where they spend most of their time, which makes carryover and real-life practice much easier. We also involve caregivers along the way so you feel comfortable supporting those same skills outside of sessions.
If you want, we can check your exact address and see what in-home availability looks like in your area.
A few things really set us apart. First, we’re big believers in parent involvement. You’re part of the team, not just watching from the sidelines. We also keep smaller caseloads, which means your child gets more attention and more intentional care.
Cultivate is also BCBA-led, so there’s always a highly trained clinician available to look at progress, problem-solve, and keep things moving in the right direction. On top of that, we’re BHCOE-accredited and active members of CASP, which basically means we follow some of the highest standards in the ABA field.
We focus on making therapy engaging, fun, and relationship-based. Our BCBAs and RBTs spend time building real connection with your child because we know strong rapport = strong progress. Your family gets matched with a team tailored to your child’s needs, learning style, and personality.
We want to walk alongside your family with compassion, consistency, and high-quality programming that truly makes a difference.
It really depends on your child! We figure out the right number of hours after we do a formal assessment with a BCBA. During that assessment, we look at your child’s current skills, what they’re struggling with, and what kinds of behaviors might be getting in the way of learning.
Some kids benefit from just a few hours a week, and others do best with more consistent, daily support. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” answer — we build the schedule around what will genuinely help your child make progress.
Once the assessment is done, we’ll talk through everything together and explain what we recommend, why we’re recommending it, and what it will look like for your family.
Yes, absolutely! We actually want parents to be involved because it makes a huge difference in how quickly kids make progress. We offer regular parent training where we walk you through the same strategies we use in sessions and show you how to use them at home, in the community, or wherever challenges come up.
It’s not meant to be overwhelming; it’s meant to give you confidence and help make life easier for you and your child. We’re here to support the whole family, not just the child in therapy.
A good starting point is your child’s diagnosis. If your child has been diagnosed with autism, ABA therapy is usually recommended because it’s one of the most effective, evidence-based supports for autistic kids. But the exact need and amount of therapy really depends on your child as an individual.
A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) will do a full assessment — looking at your child’s communication, play skills, social skills, daily routines, and any behaviors that might be getting in the way of learning. From there, they’ll let you know whether ABA is a good fit and how many hours might be helpful.
Think of it like this: the assessment helps us understand where your child is right now and what kind of support would genuinely move them forward.
ABA therapy doesn’t look the same for every child, it’s totally individualized. We build each session around your child’s strengths, goals, age, and the areas they’re working on. Some parts of the day might look more structured, where we do things like discrete trial teaching (DTT) or repeated practice of a skill. Other times, it’s more natural and play-based, using natural environment teaching (NET) so kids learn in real-life moments.
Most kids get a mix of both styles. We also build in chances for structured social play, group responding, and peer interactions, which are great for practicing things like sharing, turn-taking, communication, and following group expectations, which are all super helpful for school readiness.
Overall, sessions should feel supportive, engaging, and meaningful for your child while helping them build the skills they need to grow and succeed.
We track progress every single day using a data collection system. During sessions, your child’s therapist records how they’re doing on each goal so we can actually see what’s improving and what might need extra support.
Your child’s BCBA reviews that data at pretty regularly. If the progress isn’t heading in the right direction, then we switch up the teaching approach, adjust the program, or try a new strategy to keep things moving forward.
It’s all about making sure your child is growing, learning, and getting the most out of their time in therapy.
Yes, absolutely! We work with kids across all communication levels — from nonverbal to fully verbal and everywhere in between. Being nonverbal doesn’t limit a child’s ability to benefit from ABA at all.
We focus on helping each child communicate in the way that works best for them, whether that’s pictures (PECS), gestures, sign language, or a communication device (AAC). Our team can also collaborate with speech therapists to make sure we’re supporting communication from every angle.
The goal isn’t just “talking,” it’s helping your child express themselves, feel understood, and build confidence in their own way.
No, we don’t do formal autism diagnoses here. But we do offer quick, free screening tools online like the M-CHAT and CAST, which can help you figure out whether a full evaluation might be needed.
If you do need a formal diagnosis, we can connect you with one of our diagnostician partners who provide convenient, virtual evaluations so you don’t have to travel or wait months for an appointment.
