How to Explain Autism to Kids
Talking to a child about autism can bring up a lot of questions. You may be explaining their own autism diagnosis, helping a sibling understand why their brother or sister experiences certain situations differently, or

Helping you navigate
the autism journey,
every step of the way.
Parents are often the first to notice when their child’s development may be unfolding differently than expected. Observing differences in communication, social interaction, play, or responses to the environment is natural, and consulting with a professional can offer valuable clarity and direction.
Since every child develops at their own pace, recognizing and understanding these differences can be challenging without expert guidance. A comprehensive autism evaluation can help determine whether these developmental patterns are related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and provide families with helpful recommendations and supportive strategies.
At Cultivate Behavioral Health & Education, we work alongside families in Lexington to help them better understand developmental concerns and confidently navigate the autism screening and diagnostic process.
An autism diagnosis is not a limitation—it’s insight. It helps families better understand how their child communicates, learns, and experiences the world, opening the door to therapies, educational resources, and supports that promote skill development, independence, and confidence.

An autism screening is typically a short assessment used to determine whether a child may exhibit traits associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While it doesn’t provide a formal diagnosis, it can help indicate whether a more comprehensive evaluation is needed. In contrast, a diagnostic evaluation is an in-depth process conducted by a qualified clinician, who reviews the child’s developmental history, observes behavior, and uses standardized tools to determine whether the child meets the criteria for an autism diagnosis.

Gathering any records related to your child’s development—such as prior evaluations, therapy notes, school reports, or IEP/504 documents, if available—can be helpful. Parents are also encouraged to jot down specific behaviors, developmental concerns, or questions they’d like to discuss. Even without formal records, your personal observations and experiences with your child are extremely valuable throughout the evaluation process.

Yes. Academic success doesn’t always mean a child isn’t facing developmental challenges. Some children with autism may perform well in school yet still have difficulties with social interaction, adapting to changes in routine, sensory sensitivities, or communication. An evaluation can help identify these needs and determine whether additional support could be helpful.
