For many families with children on the autism spectrum, flying can be a stressful and overwhelming experience. From navigating the airport to boarding the plane, each step involves new environments, unfamiliar sounds, and unexpected changes, all of which can present sensory and emotional challenges for neurodivergent individuals.
That’s why on World Autism Awareness Day, Cultivate Behavioral Health & Education was proud to join American Airlines and Miami International Airport (MIA) in a special event designed to help children with autism and other developmental differences become more comfortable with air travel.
As featured on NBC Miami News, the event gave children and their families a chance to experience a mock travel journey, from ticketing and TSA check-in to boarding a plane. This simulation was created to help children understand what to expect at the airport and ease the anxiety that can come with new routines and busy environments.
A Meaningful Moment for Miami Families
Our very own Clinical Outreach Specialist, Pamela Perez-Melms, M.A., BCBA, ITDS participated in the event by guiding families through the experience and providing insight into how Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy strategies can be used to support children in navigating new or challenging settings, like airports.
“This event is so important because it gives families the chance to prepare in a supportive environment,” said Perez-Melms. “It’s not just about learning what to expect, it’s about helping these kids feel seen, safe, and celebrated for who they are.”
With the help of MIA staff, flight crew members, and ABA professionals, children had the opportunity to:
-
Practice walking through security
-
Board and explore an American Airlines plane
-
Meet flight attendants and pilots
-
Sit in assigned seats and buckle their seatbelts
-
Hear common announcements and sounds in a low-pressure setting
Supporting Neurodivergent Travelers Every Step of the Way
For families of children with autism, small steps like these can make a BIG difference. When children are exposed to real-life scenarios in a structured, sensory-considerate environment, they’re more likely to develop confidence, reduce anxiety, and generalize coping strategies in the future.
At Cultivate Behavioral Health & Education, we are passionate about creating inclusive opportunities like this that extend therapy beyond the clinic and into everyday life. Events like this reflect our commitment to neuro-affirming care, family support, and community collaboration.
